These are problems to help you study units 1-3 (the actual unit is noted in the question). There is no grade attached to these, and they are completely optional. There is an answer key available.

  1. (Units 1, 2) Explain the following terms in a sentence or two: natural capital, carrying capacity, intellectual capital, externality, the triple bottom line.
  2. (Unit 1) What is the difference between sustainable and renewable? Use a specific example of your own choice to explain the difference. [Do not use an example from the notes]
  3. (Unit 3) Explain (in about 300 words) the rôle of science & technology in helping the world achieve the goal of sustainable development.
  4. (Units 1, 2) (About 400 words) If you were president of the US, what would be your approach for moving the US economy towards sustainability? Assume that your starting point comes after winning the 2008 presidential election- be realistic, you cannot turn the US into a socialist state, and/or force everyone to give up their SUVs! You inherit a ballooning budget deficit and an economic downturn, so money is very limited.
