Luis Colón

Luis A. Colón received the Baccalaureate degree in Chemistry from University of Puerto Rico Cayey, a Ph.D. (1991) in Analytical Chemistry from UMASS Lowell, and conducted postdoctoral studies at Stanford University. He joined the faculty at The State University of New York at Buffalo in 1993, where he is Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry.
Prof Colón's research interests are in the area of Separation Sciences. He holds 8 US Patents and has over 75 research related publications. His research work has also led to over 350 presentations at scientific meetings and universities (national and international). He has supervised and mentored 19 PhD and 10 Master students, in addition to 33 undergraduates. Colón is a member of the Editorial/Advisory board of four scientific journals and was the Editor of the Americas for the international journal The Analyst from 2001-2007. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences (AAAS), The Society for Applied Spectroscopy, The Puerto Rico Chemist Association, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. Among his awards are The Whitaker Foundation Fellow (1994-97), The National Science Foundation Award for Special Creativity (1999-2001), The Faculty of the Year Award by the Compact for Faculty Diversity and AGEP (2003), elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2005), The Optimista Award and inducted to Hispanic Scholarship Fund Alumni Hall of Fame (2005), and the 2009 AAAS Mentor Award (2010).
