Waterfalls at Stone Valley, in Colton, NY, 15 min south of Potsdam

Potsdam is in the "North Country", in Saint Lawrence County. It is close to the Adirondack Mountains and the St Lawrence River, including the Thousand Islands. It is also close to Ontario in Canada; Ottawa and Montreal are within 2-21/2 hours drive.

Some possible mini-vacations

A trip to NERM 2010 can combine business with pleasure. Some possible mini-vacations include:

Spring in Lake Placid

Lake Placid and Saranac Lake are just over an hour away to the southwest, via Route 458. There is a good choice of hotels and motels in this area. Do some country shopping, take a trip on the lake, or see the Lake Placid Olympic Center (the first Winter Olympics were held here in 1932). If you enjoy the outdoors, Whiteface Mountain and the High Peaks are nearby, and the kayaking around Saranac Lake is superb.

Explore the Thousand Islands

Just over an hour northeast of Potsdam lie the Thousand Islands. You can stay at Clayton - where the famous Thousand Islands Dressing was invented - or Alexandria Bay, a traditional coastal vacation spot. Further west is Cape Vincent. Boat tours leave from Clayton and Alex Bay to visit the islands, and tourists can explore Boldt Castle.

Canada

Ottawa is a beautiful city, about a two hour drive north of Potsdam (via the bridge at Ogdensburg). Walk around Parliament Square to see the government buildings and see the "Mounties"; tours of the old parliament building give a lovely history of the country. Tour the Museum of Civilization, or enjoy the excellent shopping and restaurants.

Also near to Potsdam (about 2.5 hours) is Montreal, in Quebec. See the old city, including the Notre Dame cathedral, or take in the BioDome with its various miniature ecosystems. Montreal is justly famous for its lively nightlife, so watch your students!
